Ten days is enough to design a varied trip, but not to see China as a whole. This example follows destinations in our current collection. It is a proposed route to adapt after checking flights, trains, entry arrangements and your family's walking comfort, not a scheduled departure.
The ten-day outline at a glance
The schedule counts ten calendar days from arrival to departure. It assumes you can arrange a sensible onward departure from the Zhangjiajie end of the route. If you must return to your original gateway, reserve time for that journey instead of silently adding it to the last day.
No particular flight or train is promised here. A planner should check date-specific services and availability before confirming the route, and show you the impact if a connection is indirect.
| Days | Base or movement | Main purpose |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hong Kong arrival | Settle in; no essential timed sightseeing. |
| 2-3 | Hong Kong | A harbour day and one larger family outing. |
| 4 | Hong Kong to Shenzhen | Crossing, hotel and a relaxed local evening. |
| 5 | Shenzhen | Choose an old-town or creative-neighbourhood focus. |
| 6 | Transfer towards Zhangjiajie | Protect the day for transport and settling in. |
| 7-8 | Zhangjiajie / Wulingyuan area | Two selected forest-park days. |
| 9 | Tianmen Mountain, if suitable | A separate outing, with conditions checked. |
| 10 | Departure or onward transfer | No essential mountain visit before departure. |
Days 1-5: start with cities, not a race
Keep the arrival day light even if your flight lands early. On the next two days, choose a harbour experience and one bigger outing in Hong Kong. Adding a theme park means making room for it, not squeezing it between a museum and an island trip.
In Shenzhen, select one main neighbourhood for your full day. Nantou provides an older-city contrast, while a creative-district visit offers another direction. You do not need both, plus a distant coastal excursion, to make a short Shenzhen stay worthwhile.
Day 6: protect the journey between chapters
Treat the move to Zhangjiajie as a transport day until the actual connection has been checked. Compare hotel-to-hotel time, baggage handling and waiting as well as the headline service duration. Do not attach a non-refundable evening attraction simply because a timetable looks favourable.
If the available connection consumes too much of the holiday, change the route. You could stay longer in two bases or choose a different mountain chapter on another trip. An itinerary should respond to the transport that exists for your dates, not force your family to follow an attractive diagram.
Days 7-10: give the landscape usable time
Use two days for selected routes in the national forest park, then consider Tianmen Mountain separately. Discuss each day's walking, internal transport and likely standing time before agreeing the plan. Hotel location and the chosen park entrances need to work together.
Keep the final day for departure. Poor visibility or a closure can affect any outdoor visit, so discuss what can be rearranged and what cannot. You can request flexibility, but no private itinerary can guarantee clear weather or unrestricted access.
The simpler version: Hong Kong and Zhangjiajie
For younger children or travellers who dislike changing hotels, remove the Shenzhen stay. Use the recovered time for rest, an extra Hong Kong outing or more flexibility around the mountain days. The transfer still needs date-specific checking; removing one base does not guarantee a direct service.
This is not a lesser holiday. Fewer hotel changes can give you more time enjoying the places you chose. Ask everyone whether they would prefer another destination or a less hurried version of the existing route.
Check the whole journey before booking its pieces
Because this outline includes Hong Kong and mainland China, entry arrangements must be checked separately. Any visa-free or transit option must fit your own passport, dates, purpose, entry point, onward route and permitted areas. This sample itinerary does not establish eligibility.
Confirm the main transport and accommodation logic before adding optional attractions. Then review the proposal as a whole: rooms, guiding, vehicle needs, admissions, exclusions and cancellation terms. Keep enough uncommitted time that a small change does not unravel the holiday.

Common questions
Can we add Beijing or Shanghai to this route?
You can ask for a different route, but we would not simply add another distant city without removing something or extending the holiday. Compare total transfer time before deciding.
Is this a bookable ten-day package?
No. It is a planning example. Transport, dates, hotels, services and costs must be checked and agreed in a personalised proposal.
