Your First Trip to China: A Step-by-Step Planning Checklist

Set the route first, check entry for every traveller, then confirm the main transport and hotels. Prepare payment and communication backups before departure, and leave document handling to the appropriate official or secure booking channels.

A first trip becomes easier to organise when you put decisions in the right order. Buying scattered attraction tickets first can leave you with a schedule that does not fit the transport or the family. Work through these steps before turning the trip into a collection of reservations.

Step 1: write down the complete journey

List your arrival point, overnight bases, major transfers and departure point. Include any stop in Hong Kong and every time you would enter or leave mainland China. Count the days available after arrival and before departure, not just the nights on a hotel search.

Mark the experiences that matter most and the ones you can drop. For a family, add children's general age ranges, walking comfort and the pace everyone prefers. For friends, agree whether the priority is food, scenery, culture or independent time.

Step 2: check passports and entry individually

Check the requirements that apply to each traveller's nationality, document, purpose and dates. Children need their own assessment. Consult the relevant Chinese embassy or consulate and official immigration information; Hong Kong entry must be checked separately.

If considering a transit or visa-free arrangement, have the entire route checked before relying on it. Do not infer eligibility from a friend's passport or a route with a different onward destination. Confirm the documents requested by the authorities and carrier. This checklist is general preparation, not immigration advice or an admission guarantee.

Step 3: confirm the bookings that hold the route together

Start with major transport and accommodation. Check traveller names against the documents required for the booking. For Hong Kong high-speed rail, MTR's real-name system links travel to the document used for purchase, so consistency matters.

For hotels, confirm the actual room arrangement, occupancy and breakfast rather than relying on a broad room label. For private services, identify transport, guide language, hours and inclusions. Keep a record of change and cancellation terms before making payments.

Step 4: prepare more than one payment option

Official mainland guidance describes mobile payments, bank cards and cash, including options to connect eligible international cards with supported mobile payment services. Availability depends on your provider and circumstances, so check the current app and bank instructions rather than assuming setup will be immediate.

Make sure at least one adult has an independent fallback if a phone, card or verification process fails. Check transaction charges and limits with the provider. Do not share card details, passwords or verification codes with a tour enquiry contact.

Step 5: make the first arrival workable offline

Save the hotel name and address in Chinese and English, booking references, the pickup location and an agreed contact method. Ask your mobile provider what service will be available and test essential account access before leaving. Do not rely on a single app as your only copy of the plan.

If a pickup is arranged, agree where to meet, how the driver will identify themselves and what to do if you are delayed. Keep those details accessible without depending on a message arriving just as you land.

Step 6: finish the family and personal checks

Confirm child restraints where needed, bedding, general food preferences and any specific accessibility requirements with the relevant providers. Discuss individual health or medication questions with a qualified professional and check the applicable rules before carrying medicines across a border.

Read your government's destination advice and arrange insurance appropriate to the actual itinerary and activities. Regional considerations differ; a city break and a more remote landscape route should not be treated as identical preparations.

Step 7: reconfirm the moving parts before departure

Check transport times, weather, attraction notices and your first transfer again close to travel. Make sure the party has the latest version of the itinerary, not different screenshots from earlier discussions. Confirm who can authorise changes and how additional costs would be agreed.

For an initial China Storyline enquiry, share dates, party size, interests and your questions. Leave passport scans, payment information and children's identifying details out of the enquiry form. If documents are later necessary for a booking, agree the appropriate secure process separately.

Common questions

Does completing this checklist guarantee entry?

No. Only the relevant authorities decide admission. Requirements depend on each traveller and can change; confirm them through official channels and your carrier.

Will the enquiry form automatically send an email?

No. It prepares your details for WhatsApp. You review the message and must send it there yourself; your email is included only as a follow-up contact for the enquiry.
